It remains one of the most symbolic places of the conclave. Known as the Chapel of Tears, it is where the vestments for the future Pope are kept. This is where the newly elected candidate goes after accepting the responsibility of becoming the new pontiff. And it is where he often experiences a powerful psychological blow that may bring him to tears: dressing as the successor of Peter.
P. ÁLVARO SERRANO, Expert in Church History
Once a Pope has been elected, there is a chapel called the ‘Chapel of Tears,’ where the pope goes to weep, to say: ‘I am not worthy. I am going to give my life…’ Truly, it is a martyrdom, because you die to yourself in order to confirm your brothers in the faith — your brother cardinals, your brother bishops, your brother priests, and your brothers throughout the world; all Christians, all Catholics whom you must now confirm in that faith. That is the Chapel of Tears.
This room is located to the left of the Sistine Chapel when facing the altar. It is normally closed to the public. Right now, it has already been prepared with three cassocks of different sizes for the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church.
