On one side, the blue background and white lily on the papal coat of arms represent the Virgin Mary.
On the other side, Pope Leo XIV has chosen to reflect his roots as Augustinian, hence why there is a burning heart pierced by an arrow in its design. It is a symbol that represents the words of Saint Augustine: “You have wounded my heart with your love,” taken from arguably St. Augustine's greatest work, Confessions.
Another symbol is the book that the heart rests on top of. It represents the Word of God and its power to transform the heart of every person, as it did with Saint Augustine.
The chosen motto is highly symbolic: it means “In the one Christ, we are one.” This motto is a strong call for dialogue and unity within the Church. It also comes from Saint Augustine, specifically from the sermon he gave on Psalm 127.
