With the election of Pope Leo XIV, excitement has been spreading throughout Peru, particularly in the northern region of the country.

The minister of the Peruvian Embassy to the Holy See highlighted Pope Leo XIV’s deep bond with the region of Chiclayo, a connection that has become evident across the nation since his appointment.

MANUEL CARRASCO, Minister, Embassy of Peru
Unlike the people of northern Peru, who already knew of his work and mission, the rest of the country has been swept up by the enthusiasm. We are now in a beautiful moment of renewed hope, believing we will continue to have a truly great spiritual guide.

As Cardinal Prevost, he was present for many of the difficult times in Chiclayo like the pandemic and natural disasters.
The minister noted that, in his opinion, all those moments touched the hearts of many Peruvians, who now see Pope Leo XIV as one of their own.

In St. Peter’s Square, his words in Spanish were deeply moving—especially his reference to Peru. What can I say? We are living a beautiful moment of discovery, of getting to know the figure of the Holy Father better. I mean not just as Peruvians from every corner of the country, but as a region, because I believe all Spanish-speaking people are inspired by having a Holy Father so close to our part of the world.

The election of Pope Leo XIV marks a new chapter for the Church. In Peru, many hope the new pope will soon visit the region that was once the heart of his pastoral mission.
