The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, is confident that Pope Leo XIV will visit Peru—a country where he once served as a missionary. The Colombian president hopes that the Pope will visit Colombia at some point during that trip. In fact, during their meeting at the Vatican, he formally extended the invitation.

Another key topic Petro discussed with the Pope was climate change. The Colombian president told Pope Leo XIV that the United States should prioritize addressing this issue over migration.
That’s why he suggested that the American-born Pope, who holds Peruvian citizenship as well, could serve as a mediator to help build a bridge between Colombia and the United States.
