Pope Leo the 14th continues to receive invitations from high-ranking leaders to visit their countries—ranging from the kings of Spain and Colombian President Gustavo Petro to the Vice President of the United States.
Now, Australia has joined the list. Its Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, had a private meeting with the Pope, proposed a very specific date for him to visit.
He invited Pope Leo XIV to travel to Sydney in 2028. The reason: to take part in the International Eucharistic Congress—an event Australia will host, commemorating 100 years since it first gathering.
Sydney's Archbishop, Anthony Fisher, also hopes that Pope Leo XIV will travel to the city.
In his statement to Australian media, he said that the Pope’s presence would be a powerful catalyst for evangelization and the reaffirmation of faith throughout the country.
A few months ago, in an interview with this outlet, Fisher already spoke about what he believes will be one of the main challenges of the Eucharistic Congress.
ANTHONY FISHER, OP, Archbishop of Sydney
After the period of Covid, after a long period of secularization in Western Countries, like my own, there are a lot of Catholics who are not very connected with the Eucharistic or as connected as they should be.
Pope Leo's visit to Australia would be a great opportunity, not to mention that it’s a country he knows well. When he was Prior General of the Augustinians, the then-Father Prevost visited Australia on several occasions.
