The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, meaning it is the seat of Rome's bishop, who happens to be the Pope. This is why Pope Leo XIV went to take possession of this Basilica, which is the oldest in Rome.
It was Cardinal Reina, the Vicar of Rome, that presided over the ceremony by which the Pope is invited to assume his role as bishop of the city.
The chair is symbolized by a marble and mosaic throne located at the back of the Basilica. The symbolism of this moment drew enthusiastic applause…
Immediately afterward, a group of faithful, including priests, religious, and Roman families, approached the Pope in what is known as “the rite of obedience.”
In his homily, Pope Leo spoke about Pope John Paul I, whose pontificate lasted only 33 days. He recalled the words Pope John Paul I said to the people of Venice when he was named Patriarch:
POPE LEO XIV
To the people of Rome, I say something similar: I assure you that I love you, that I only wish to enter into your service and to offer all my humble strength, the little that I have and all that I am.
At the end of the celebration, Pope Leo XIV appeared at the Basilica’s balcony to greet those waiting outside and to deliver a message:
POPE LEO XIV
Let us live our faith, especially during this Jubilee Year, seeking hope, but also striving to be a witness that offers hope to the world — a world suffering so much, so much pain, from war, violence, and poverty.
Then, in the popemobile, he traveled from St. John Lateran to St. Mary Major. There, Pope Leo XIV once again prayed before the Salus Populi Romani, the protector of the Roman people.
Afterwards, Pope Leo visited the tomb of Pope Francis once again.
Finally, just as he did at St. John Lateran, Pope Leo XIV appeared at the balcony of St. Mary Major, greeting everyone present before returning to the Vatican.
POPE LEO XIV
I thank all those who work in this Basilica, the two cardinals who are with me this afternoon, and so many people who dedicate themselves to helping us live our life of prayer and devotion, and above all who help us draw closer to the Mother of Jesus, the Mother of God, Most Holy Mary. This is a wonderful opportunity to renew our devotion to Mary, Salus Populi Romani, who has accompanied the people of Rome so many times in their needs.
After a busy afternoon, Pope Leo XIV returned to the Vatican, now officially as Bishop of Rome.
