Around 93,000 faithful passed through this Basilica in just 15 days to venerate the remains of Saint Teresa of Jesus. It's an unprecedented event, as it marks the third time in history that the saint’s body has been publicly displayed. The last occasion was in 1914.
Her remains were returned to their original resting place on May 26th: a silver urn located inside the church in the city where the founder of the Discalced Carmelites passed away. According to the order's prior, seeing Saint Teresa conveys something that goes beyond words.
FR. MIGUEL ÁNGEL GONZALEZ, Prior, Discalced Carmelites of Alba de Tormes
Anyone who approaches Saint Teresa of Jesus is never left unchanged. One's inner self is transformed—by her protection, her example, the living and enduring testimony of this great saint, Doctor of the Church, Saint Teresa of Jesus.
In August, a study of the relics was authorized. One of the results was the reconstruction of what Saint Teresa’s face might have looked like at age 50. It is now considered the most accurate representation to date of the 14th-century Spanish mystic.
