The Vatican is a state in every sense. And although it is the smallest country in the world, it has its own services. Not everyone knows that within the Vatican walls there is a medical center and a pharmacy.

Its members are none other than the Vatican citizens and residents, as well as cardinals, patriarchs, bishops, and employees of the Holy See.

But who is in charge of directing the Vatican’s health service?

Until now, it was Dr. Arcangeli. However, if you take a look at Pope Leo XIV’s new appointment, you might recognize his face.

It’s Dr. Luigi Carbone, until now the deputy director, and Pope Francis’s doctor. Many didn’t know him until he became the public voice on Pope Francis' illness before the press.

DR. LUIGI CARBONE, Doctor, Vatican City State
As mentioned before, he is not out of danger, so like all fragile patients, I always say they are on the balance of gold. That is, it takes very little to tip the scales.

But beyond matters related to the Popes, the director of the health service is responsible for much more. One of the most challenging times, for example, was during the COVID pandemic—managing the arrival and distribution of vaccines.

Now, Dr. Carbone will be the one in charge of everything related to health in the Vatican. As a point of curiosity, the responsibilities of this role are also tied to the sede vacante (the period when the papal seat is vacant). The person holding this position is the one responsible for officially certifying the death of the pope.
