In 2023, then-Cardinal Prevost received an honorary doctorate from the university that had been under his jurisdiction while he was bishop in Chiclayo—the Catholic University of Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo (USAT).

He had been made a cardinal by Pope Francis just a few months earlier. In his speech, he reflected on the idea of Catholic ethics that had been expressed 40 years before by a former Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin.

CARD. ROBERT F. PREVOST
"For example, a Catholic cannot claim to be pro-life just to take a stance against abortion, while at the same time saying they are in favor of the death penalty. That would not be consistent with the Church’s social doctrine. So we can say that our way of thinking and teaching must be coherent."

Cardinal Prevost emphasized that he saw it as a duty for all Catholics to unite efforts to build a society in which the value of every human life is respected and protected.
