This is how the Corpus Christi celebration began in Rome. Pope Leo XIV left St. John Lateran to preside over the Mass at the entrance of the basilica.

In his homily, Pope Leo reflected on the meaning of God made bread… and the lack of food in many places around the world.

POPE LEO XIV
In the face of the misery of many, the accumulation of wealth by a few is a sign of indifferent pride, which causes pain and injustice. Instead of sharing, opulence wastes the fruits of the earth and human labor. Especially in this Jubilee year, the example of the Lord remains an urgent guide for our actions and service: sharing bread to multiply hope proclaims the coming of the Kingdom of God.

At the end of the Mass, the traditional procession from St. John Lateran to Saint Mary Major began. And Pope Leo XIV led it on foot, carrying the Monstrance in his arms. The route covered over a mile and about 20,000 people were in attendance.

Following the Monstrance were the faithful, alongside some cardinals that live in Rome, and high-ranking officials of the Curia.

This was the moment when the procession ended—at an altar at the doors of Saint Mary Major. Although no video was distributed from inside, Pope Leo XVI prayed before the Salus Populi Romani, patroness of Rome.

He also passed by the tomb of Pope Francis. One day earlier, June 21, marked two months since the death of his predecessor.
