The president of Peru has already invited Pope Leo XIV to visit her country. She did so after his election, during a private meeting they had at the Vatican.

By protocol, a pope usually does not make an apostolic trip unless he receives two formal invitations: one from the head of state and one from the bishops of the country.

Pope Leo had already received the invitation from President Dina Boluarte, and now he also has received one from the bishops of Peru as well. A Peruvian delegation of bishops was at the Vatican on June 30 and extended a formal invitation to the pope for a pastoral visit to Peru.

Virtually all Peruvians, who have passed through Rome, are hoping for this visit. It would be especially meaningful if the Pope stops in Chiclayo to return to the place where he spent his years before moving to the Vatican.

The last pope to visit Peru was Pope Francis, in January 2018, during the same trip in which he visited Chile.

Take a look at this moment: Robert Prevost, then bishop of Chiclayo, greeted the Argentinian Pope—unaware that seven years later, he would become his successor.
