Pope Leo XIV has already appointed the new president of the Vatican’s anti-abuse commission. His name is Thibault Verny and he is a French bishop who has been part of this body since 2022. In fact, he can be seen at some of the meetings with Pope Francis.
In France, he worked against abuse both in the Diocese of Paris and within the French Bishops' Conference, where he accompanied victims and engaged in dialogue with civil and judicial authorities.
He now replaces American Cardinal O'Malley, who has led the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors since its founding in 2014.
CARD. SEAN O'MALLEY
Former President, Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors
The norms are zero tolerance, how to respond when there is an accusation, etc., but our commission also wants to promote the safety of minors in all aspects of the Church.
The commission is a consulting body, which means that in practical terms, it has no executive power. Its work is primarily focused on the prevention of abuse by promoting various protocols and providing support to victims.
