Pope Leo XIV has taken up many of the remaining fronts left by Pope Francis, like the Synod. From the Gemelli Hospital, the Argentinian Pope approved the Synod's implementation process, which will conclude in 2028 with an assembly in the Vatican.
The new Pope has already ratified what his predecessor approved, both the guidelines for its implementation and the calendar with the planned dates.
It should be remembered that Pope Francis left ten topics out of the assembly, which he requested be studied separately. For example, the female diaconate, seminaries, the role of the nuncio, and ministries in the Church. To this end, several commissions were created.
The undersecretary of the Synod, Nathalie Becquart, has already explained who would be in charge of coordinating this work.
SR. NATHALIE BECQUART
Undersecretary of the Synod
The International Theological Commission, which works in the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, will coordinate working groups on important topics that came up at the Synod but require more time to study and deepen.
Pope Leo XIV wanted to add two more to these ten commissions: one to study the liturgy from a Synod perspective, and another on the statutes of episcopal conferences, ecclesial assemblies, and particular councils.
The work was to be presented in June 2025, but Pope Leo XIV decided to postpone the date. Now, the results must be ready by December 31st, 2025.
