At the threshold of the Youth Jubilee, this was the scene in St. Peter’s Square for Pope Leo XIV’s Angelus. Flags from many countries waved before the pontiff.
Pope Leo reviewed the current state of international affairs, beginning with the border disputes between Cambodia and Thailand, which up to that day had left more than 35 dead and around 200,000 displaced.
POPE LEO XIV
My heart is with all those who suffer due to conflicts and violence around the world. In particular, I pray for the people involved in the clashes on the border between Thailand and Cambodia, especially the children and displaced families. May the Prince of Peace inspire everyone to seek dialogue and reconciliation.
The Pope also mentioned Syria and paused to address the latest news from Gaza, where many people, including children, are dying from malnutrition.
POPE LEO XIV
I continue to follow with great concern the extremely serious humanitarian situation in Gaza, where the civilian population is being annihilated by hunger and remains exposed to violence and death. I renew my sincere appeal for a ceasefire, for the release of hostages, and for full respect for humanitarian law.
That same day also marked the 5th World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. Pope Leo XIV urged that they not be left alone.
