After a months-long stalemate on the Senate floor, the US Senate confirmed former CatholicVote President, Brian Burch, as US Ambassador to the Holy See.
President Trump nominated Brian Burch back in December of 2024, at which time Burch released a statement to social media expressing his excitement and honor.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to have been nominated by President Trump to serve as the United States Ambassador to the Holy See.”
The stalemate was not only for Burch. More than 50 Trump appointments were also blocked by the Democrats. According to US media, it was in response to the permanent closure of USAID, an agency dedicated to international cooperation and considered the humanitarian arm of the United States.
Burch will follow in the footsteps of Joe Donnelly, who was the Holy See Ambassador under President Joe Biden and stepped down from his post last July. The U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See post has remained vacant ever since.
JOE DONNELLY
U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See (2022-2024)
The first time I met with the Pope, he said to me, “This is a hard time.” And it has been in regards to the conflicts out there.
There's so many agents of hatred out there and what we try to do is bring back some of the light, some of the peace, some of the ways that peace can be achieved in this world.
Burch is a lifelong Catholic, who grew up in the same city as Pope Leo XIV, meaning that, for the future, there will be two Chicago natives leading the American-Vatican alliance.
