An armed group stormed an orphanage on the night of August 4 in Kenscoff, south of the capital, Port-au-Prince. They kidnapped nine people, including an Irish missionary, seven Haitian staff members, and a three-year-old child with disability.

The attack comes amid growing violence in Haiti, where armed gangs control large parts of the country, and the police lack the resources to stop them.

Since the assassination of President Moïse in 2021, the country has faced a deep institutional collapse, with thousands killed and displaced. More than 1.3 million people have been forced to flee their homes, while violence has made it nearly impossible to access hospitals, schools, and humanitarian aid.

According to a recent UN report, more than 1,500 murders, 185 kidnappings, and hundreds of cases of sexual violence were recorded between April and June of 2025 alone.
