In 2022, paid paternity leave was extended from one to three days in the Vatican. Then, in January of 2025, they extended it again – this time to five days. However, this extension only applied the employees of the Governatorate of the Vatican City State. Now, this updated regulation is being expanded to all employees of the Holy See. All fathers must use these days within 30 days from the birth of the baby.

However, this is not the only new measure. Rules were also approved for parents who have a child with disability. It is explained that from now on, parents are entitled to three days of alternating paid leave each month. The Vatican entrusts the Directorate of Health and Hygiene with the responsibility of assessing the level of disability of the individuals, and their decision will be final.
