All eyes have been on Alaska these days. On August 15, Trump and Putin met for a summit that lasted about three hours, but produced no agreements or a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Two days before this meeting, Pope Leo XIV decided to return to Castel Gandolfo. It was on Wednesday afternoon, the 13th. Upon his arrival, journalists asked him about his expectations. This was his response.
I'm always looking for ceasefires. We need to end the violence, the death toll, and see how they can reach a compromise, so to speak, because after so long, they're no longer managing to end the war… what's the real goal? We must always seek dialogue, diplomatic work, and not violence.

Two days after the Trump-Putin summit, the Pope prayed the Angelus and, at the end, without specifically referring to the ceasefire attempt in Ukraine, asked for prayers for peace efforts.

POPE LEO XIV
Let us pray that efforts to end wars and promote peace will be successful; that, in negotiations, the common good of peoples will always come first.

In any case, the outcome of the Alaska summit was a face-to-face meeting that does not appear to have produced significant steps toward peace.
