Twenty children from Gaza are now receiving treatment at Bambino Gesù, known as the "Pope's Hospital".
On August 14, the last three arrived in Rome, in serious medical condition. They were accompanied by their parents and siblings. They are two boys, ages 6 months and 13, and a 2-year-old girl.
Since October 2023, this pioneering pediatric center in Italy has received children from Gaza. The vast majority arrive with trauma, amputations, burns, or malnutrition.
It was the Italian government that initially proposed Bambino Gesù to receive children from Gaza. They were quick to accept.
This was explained by the hospital's president in January 2024, when the first group arrived.
TIZIANO ONESTI
President, Bambino Gesù hospital
We welcome everyone regardless of religion, of wealth. We provide healthcare for all children in a special way but here the door is always open for everyone. And we consider that the Bambino Gesù carries out a whole international activity that is very important, which then concretely expresses the mission of the Church in this sense.
At this hospital, they try to offer families a safe place where they can breathe a little peace. They know the children's journey will not be easy, but they emphasize that they will be by their side, as this is the mission entrusted to them by the Holy See.
