It is the most famous chapel in the world. It was "ground zero" last May. Beneath Michelangelo's imposing fresco of the "Last Judgment", the cardinal electors had to elect the new successor to Peter.
But that is not all. Every year, this chapel receives nearly seven million tourists.
However, next year, this figure could be affected. Michelangelo's frescoes will be renovated.
They will undergo restoration work that will begin next January. The work is expected to be completed in three months and be ready before Easter. This is an extraordinary intervention that will complement what is already done annually.
The new director of a department at the Vatican Museums clarified that visits to the Sistine Chapel will not be interrupted. However, to carry out the restoration work, scaffolding will be installed to cover the wall.
The restoration team is made up of 26 experts, plus external collaborators. This restoration aims to preserve in perfect condition what is one of the most impressive works of art in the history of humanity.
