The death toll has risen after a powerful earthquake struck the Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan.
Just 10 hours later, the death toll had reached 800, while rescue efforts continue, looking for the injured and missing. The magnitude 6.0 earthquake has left widespread devastation, making it difficult for aid to reach the hardest-hit areas due to the closure of some roads.
In response to the tragedy, Pope Leo XIV sent a telegram of condolence, signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, in which he expressed his "profound sorrow for the significant loss of human life."
The Pope expressed his solidarity with the families of the victims, the injured, and emergency personnel.
He asked for "comfort and strength" for Afghan citizens in this time of great suffering.
