In Ukraine, the war is intensifying. Bombing has once again reached the capital, Kiev. The drone and missile attack on August 28 left more than 30 dead. Buildings were also damaged, including the European Union delegation in the country.

This news was echoed over the weekend by Pope Leo XIV. The pontiff did not miss the opportunity to once again call for peace in Ukraine.

POPE LEO XIV
I renew my closeness to the Ukrainian people and all the wounded families. I urge everyone not to give in to indifference, but to reach out to them through prayer and concrete gestures of charity. I forcefully reiterate my urgent appeal for an immediate ceasefire and for a serious commitment to dialogue. It is time for those responsible to abandon the logic of arms and embark on the path of negotiation and peace, with the support of the international community.

The pontiff had already sent a telegram on August 27th to commemorate the victims of the shooting at the Minnesota student complex. Four days later, he issued this message against the use of weapons.

POPE LEO XIV
Our prayers for the victims of the tragic shooting during a school Mass in the American State of Minnesota include the countless children killed and injured every day around the world. Let us plead God to stop the pandemic of arms, large and small, which infects our world.

Pope Leo also spoke about migration. He prayed for the deceased and missing who were trying to reach the Canary Islands from Mauritania.

POPE LEO XIV
Our hearts are also broken by the more than fifty people who died and approximately one hundred are still missing in the shipwreck of a boat loaded with migrants attempting the 1,100-kilometer journey to the Canary Islands, which capsized off the Atlantic coast of Mauritania.

Pope Leo XIV's agenda included a high-level meeting on Saturday. He received the President of Zimbabwe. The pontiff praised him for having abolished the death penalty in his country.
