The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem has announced the cancellation of all unpaid school debts prior to the 2024-2025 academic year. This decision was made in the spirit of the Church's Jubilee Year, a time focused on mercy, renewal and solidarity. This is made especially meaningful amidst ongoing conflict across the region.
Inspired by the tradition of the Jubilee, Church leaders wanted to offer more than just spiritual reflection. They saw this as a way to bring relief to local families, many of whom are struggling financially. The gesture aims to restore hope and strengthen community ties during difficult times.
This was not an easy decision to make because of the costs involved. As you can imagine, the various administrative offices did not fail to raise their legitimate concerns. Nevertheless, we feel it is necessary to make this gesture and to once again trust and rely on God and His Providence.
While the financial cost was significant, the Patriarchate decided to move forward. Church leadership emphasized the importance of acting with faith and generosity, trusting that this decision would bring lasting positive impact.
While past debts are cleared, families are encouraged to meet future obligations with renewed commitment. The Church hopes this moment inspires deeper unity and shared purpose, reminding us that mercy must walk hand-in-hand with responsibility.
