During an audience gathering at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV met with members of the College of Writers and collaborators of the journal, La Civiltà Cattolica. He reflected on the role of journalists in a world marked by “challenges and contradictions.”

He mentioned that media should always be voice for the poor and the excluded, as well as messengers of hope, as the world increasingly turns in on itself.

This is not the first time Pope Leo has spoken out about the importance of journalism and it's role in shaping society. His first public meeting was with hundreds of journalists, in which he called directly for the release of journalists imprisoned around the world.

Allow me to once again express the Church's solidarity with journalists who are imprisoned for trying to tell the truth.
And with these words, I also call for the release of these imprisoned journalists.
This topic is particularly relevant, as conversations surrounding freedom of speech and freedom of the press are being challenged in many countries across the globe.
