This was one of the most anticipated decisions from Prevost: who his first appointment in the Curia would be and also, who he would place at the head of the Dicastery for Bishops, the department he led at the Vatican when he was a cardinal.
Now Pope Leo has chosen his replacement: Filippo Iannone, who until now was the Prefect of the Dicastery for Legislative Texts, the department responsible for the interpretation and application of Canon Law.
However, that’s not the only role the pope has given him. As is what happened with Pope Leo himself, Iannone will also serve as President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. He will officially assume both positions on October 15.
As for the profile of the new prefect: he is an Italian Carmelite archbishop. During his tenure at Legislative Texts, for example, the penal section of the Code of Canon Law was revised, strengthening penalties for those who commit abuse of minors or financial misconduct.
MONS. FILIPPO IANNONE
Prefect, Dicastery for Legislative Texts
The new penal law has introduced new types of crimes and more clearly defined others that were already foreseen, sanctioning them with different penalties. It also includes new offenses in the economic-financial field.
Now, as head of his new dicastery, he faces no small task: selecting and shaping new bishops for the Church worldwide.
