The morning at the Vatican began like this: at 10 in the morning the opening procession started, leading into the Jubilee Mass for catechists.
Before 35,000 faithful, Pope Leo XIV delivered his homily, placing special emphasis on family being the place where faith begins.
POPE LEO XIV
The first catechists are our parents, those who first spoke with us and taught us to speak. Just as we learned our mother tongue, in the same way the proclamation of the faith cannot be delegated to others, but is carried out where we live, above all in our homes, around the table.
He also explained the role of a catechist and the importance of their mission in keeping the faith alive and teaching others the way of the Church.
POPE LEO XIV
The name of the ministry they carry out comes from the Greek verb katēchein, which means to instruct orally, to make resound. This means that the catechist is a person of the word, a word expressed through his or her own life. We have all been taught to believe through the witness of those who believed before us. As children and adolescents, as young people, as adults and even as the elderly, catechists accompany us in the faith, sharing a continuous journey.
The most moving moment was when the 39 catechists were called one by one by name.
After presenting themselves, they each received a crucifix from the Pope's hands as a sign of their vocation and mission.
At the conclusion of the Mass, a moment caught the attention of many: a little girl spontaneously ran toward the Pope with joy and received his blessing.
