This Saturday, in St. Peter’s Square, a rosary will be recited following Pope Leo XIV’s call to pray for an end to all wars. The pope announced the initiative during a general audience on September 24.

POPE LEO XIV

The month of October, which is fast approaching, is especially dedicated in the Church to the Holy Rosary. For this reason, I invite everyone, each day of the coming month, to pray the rosary for peace, as a family, and in community. In particular, on the evening of Saturday, October 11, at 6 p.m., we will pray together here in St. Peter’s Square.

Scenes like this have become increasingly common in recent years. For example, in October 2024, Pope Francis went to the Basilica of St. Mary Major to pray before the icon of Salus Populi Romani for an end to the war in Gaza.

FRANCIS

You who are always ready to receive our sorrows, come to our aid in these times weighed down by injustice and devastated by war. Wipe away the tears from the faces of those who mourn the loss of their loved ones, of their children. Awaken us from the slumber that has darkened our path, and disarm our hearts of the weapons of violence.

Pope Leo also pointed out that this Saturday’s rosary will commemorate the opening of the Second Vatican Council.
