The first outing of Pope Leo XIV as head of state was to his neighboring country: Italy.
This is more than just a courtesy visit. Italy is interested in maintaining good relations with the Vatican — and the Vatican with Italy. The Mediterranean country, for example, is responsible for minting coins for the tiny State. It also provides the airplanes for papal trips, among other things.
The presidential palace was decked out to welcome the pontiff.
The two met for half an hour. In front of those present, the Pope called for the defense of the family, life at all its stages, and the promotion of birth rates.

In this context, it is important to emphasize the fundamental value, at all levels, of respecting and protecting life in all its stages, from conception to old age, until the moment of death.
The Pope also spoke on the migration crisis and revealed his position on the issue.
POPE LEO XIV
I encourage keeping alive the attitude of openness and solidarity. At the same time, I would like to stress the importance of the constructive integration of those who arrive, into the values and traditions of Italian society.
The Italian President and the Pope also discussed current international affairs. Specifically, they welcomed the agreements reached in the Middle East regarding Gaza and the hostages.
It had been eight years since a pope had last visited the Quirinal Palace, the residence of the President of the Italian Republic.
