Pope Leo XIV declared seven new saints during the liturgical celebration of October 19. Among them were the so-called 'doctor of the poor,' José Gregorio Hernández of Venezuela, two martyrs, and founders of religious institutions, among others.
The other six beatified individuals canonized were Carmen Rendiles (Venezuela), Bartolo Longo (Italy), Ignatius Choukrallah Maloyan (Turkey), Peter To Rot (Papua New Guinea), Maria Troncatti (Italy), and Vincenza Maria Poloni (Italy).
The formula for canonization is usually as follows: In honor of the Most Holy Trinity, for the exaltation of the Catholic faith and the growth of Christian life, with the authority of Our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and our own, after long reflection, invoking divine assistance many times and having listened to the opinion of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define as saint the Blessed N.N., and we enroll him (her) among the Saints, and we establish that he (she) is to be devoutly honored among the Saints throughout the Church. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
