During the weekly audience, Pope Leo XIV addressed the emergency situation facing the Caribbean due to Hurricane Melissa.

He highlighted the severity of the storm and its impact on many people’s lives, warning about the damage and ongoing evacuations.

POPE LEO XIV
In recent days Jamaica has been struck by Hurricane Melissa, a storm of catastrophic power, causing violent flooding. It is currently sweeping across Cuba with devastating force. Thousands of people have been displaced, while homes, infrastructure and several hospitals have been damaged. I assure everyone of my closeness, praying for those who have lost their lives, for those who are fleeing and for those populations who, awaiting the storm's developments, are experiencing hours of anxiety and concern.

Looking ahead to November 1st, the Pope also remembered the faithful departed, inviting everyone to maintain hope and faith in the coming days.

POPE LEO XIV
In the coming days, the liturgy commemorates the faithful departed. May prayer for our loved ones remind us that our homeland is in heaven. The efforts to obtain temporal goods, necessary for earthly life, should always arise from love and fidelity to the truth of the Gospel, which does not pass away because it has its source in God himself.

With these words, Pope Leo XIV concluded his message, calling on the faithful to prayer and solidarity, in both times of disaster and everyday life.
