There are soccer-loving Catholics and there are Catholic soccer players. Ronald Araújo, a defensive player for FC Barcelona, is one of them. He has posted Bible passages such as, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me,” on his social media accounts.
A media storm over Araújo’s red card during a recent game against Chelsea FC has deeply affected his mental health and he has taken a leave of absence to handle the issues he is facing.
To find healing, he has decided to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land where he is currently visiting the most sacred sites of Christianity.
He is not the first player to travel to the Holy Land. Others such as Neymar Jr., Iker Casillas, and Lionel Messi, have also made this trip.
Araújo’s team and the fans of Barcelona meanwhile hope for his return as he seeks healing on his journey to the birthplace of the Christian faith.
