At the gate of Castel Gandolfo, where Pope Leo XIV goes for small retreats every week, the Roman pontiff answered questions from journalists, something that has already become a routine.
After holding a meeting with the president of Ukraine at Villa Barberini, this was one of the first topics he was asked about.
POPE LEO XIV
We spoke specifically about the issue of kidnapped and imprisoned children, about how the Church can help return them to Ukraine and, above all, help the children. Help, let’s say, also at the level that we have offered many times, with the Holy See and negotiations, although the offer has not been accepted so far. But we are willing to look for a solution.
Reporters also took the opportunity to ask him about the role Europe plays in a possible peace.
POPE LEO XIV
I think Europe’s role is very important; the unity of the European countries is truly significant, especially in this case. Seeking a peace agreement without including Europe in the talks is not realistic; the war is in Europe, and I think that the guarantees being sought, also regarding security today and in the future, must include Europe.
He added that this is a unique moment for European leaders to try to reach an agreement and attempt, together, to find a solution to the war.
POPE LEO XIV
I think, unfortunately, some parts of it that I have seen make a huge change in what was for many, many years a true alliance between Europe and the United States. The remarks that are made about Europe, also in interviews or something, I think trying to break apart, I think, what needs to be a very important alliance today and in the future.
Finally, Pope Leo XIV was also asked when he will finally move to the Apostolic Palace. The pontiff replied that, while there is still no fixed date and that he continues living at the Palace of the Holy Office, everything indicates that he will make the imminent move in January.
