At the end of the Christmas Eve Mass, also known as 'Midnight Mass,' Pope Leo took the figure of the Child Jesus—which he had unveiled at the opening of the celebration—and carried it in procession. He was preceded by cardinals and bishops to the Nativity scene that had been set up the left-hand transept of St. Peter’s Basilica. Once there, he paused for a moment of prayer.
