Among the various topics addressed during Vatican II, there was also the question of the Blessed Virgin Mary's role within the Church.

The question was debated as to whether the council should address what was called the Marian question—that is, the role Mary plays in the Church and in Christian life—and whether it should be treated in a separate document or included within the constitution on the Church.
In the end, it was decided that everything related to Mary would be integrated into the constitution Lumen Gentium. There is a whole chapter of the document was dedicated to her.
Despite the distinct privileges of Mary, such as freedom from original sin, the Vatican included her within this document as a way of uniting her more intimately with the People of God.
Through this inclusion, the Magisterium sought to deepen Our Lady's beautiful role as mother over the Church — a mother who draws us in and closer to Jesus Christ, her beloved Son.

The importance of Mary in the life of the Church and for Christians lies precisely in our imitation of her.
The Magisterum, seeking to guide the faithful through the modern age, knew the Church would need the motherly aid of Mary.
