We have all heard at some point that “beneath the city of Rome, there is another city.” That’s because the Italian capital is built on layers of settlements that date back more than 2,700 years.
New constructions replaced the old ones over time, due to floods, urban planning changes or updated structures, creating the “archaeological sandwich” we know today.
The “Rome Underground” is a new documentary directed by Laurent Portes and produced by MyMax, which aims to bring us precisely into the city beneath the city through the construction of a new metro line.

We wanted to tell the story of Rome from a different perspective—that is, underground—and through the most sensational discoveries made in the historic center during the construction of Line C, Rome’s new metro line. This is the story of the underground Rome.
Every time work begins in order to improve transportation in Rome, construction has to stop immediately because of the number of archaeological and cultural artifacts that come to light… That is exactly why “Underground Rome” is a project that can be defined with one word: challenge.

And this has undoubtedly been a landmark event, because the first two historic metro lines that crossed Rome only grazed the historic center. Here, for the first time, in a way, the metro passes under the historic center—the true heart of classical and imperial Rome.
A new way to connect the past and the future… a historical journey underground that invites us to discover the ancient civilization, known as the Eternal City.
