During this week's General Audience, the Paul VI Hall was once again filled with pilgrims, including faithful from Ireland, Australia, Korea, and the USA, whom the Pope welcomed in English.
Continuing his series on Vatican II, Pope Leo's catechesis was a reflection on one of the four main constitutions of the Council: Dei Verbum, which addressed the nature of divine revelation.
POPE LEO XIV
Jesus Christ radically transforms man’s relationship with God, which is henceforth a relationship of friendship. Therefore, the only condition of the new covenant is love.
Dei Verbum is a dogmatic constitution, which deals with essential matters of faith and has high doctrinal value in the Church. The document explains how God makes Himself known to all mankind ultimately through Jesus Christ.
POPE LEO XIV
We are not equal to God, but God Himself makes us similar to Him in His Son.
In Jesus, God makes us children and calls us to become like Him in our still fragile humanity.
In our rapidly expanding society of digital information, the Pope reminded us of the relationship between authentic communication and deeper communion among people.
POPE LEO XIV
It is important to grasp the difference between the word and chatter: the latter stops at the surface and does not create communion among people, whereas in authentic relationships, the word is not used only to exchange information and news, but to reveal who we are.
With this important distinction between “the word” and “chatter,” Pope Leo shared a simple framework for cultivating deeper friendship within and between communities—a friendship possible only through the grace of Christ.
