Pope Leo XIV received Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, at the Apostolic Palace.

Among the topics addressed during the meeting was how to achieve peace at a time of widespread political tension and polarization.

Metsola herself expressed her gratitude to the Pope on social media with this message:

Grateful for his clarity of purpose and for our shared reflections on advancing peace through dialogue across Europe and the world.

The trip to the Vatican and Italy aimed at strengthening ties with both, with an agenda full of meetings with Cardinal Parolin, the presidents of the Italian Council and Senate, and also the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.

These institutional meetings, as noted by the European Parliament, were intended to foster dialogue between European, national, and religious institutions, with particular attention to the geopolitical situation, the protection of freedom, competitiveness, and Europe’s role in the international context.
