The Archdiocese of Sydney is hosting the next International Eucharistic Congress in 2028, and has already begun preparing. Archbishop of Sydney Anthony Fisher has traveled to Rome to hold meetings with Vatican authorities, including Pope Leo, who has confirmed that he will attend.

“When I met him this week, I said “we are counting the days for you to come”. And he said “It is still little way away, but I’ll be there”. So, I’m counting on it.”

Australia still has many fond memories from Pope Benedict XVI's journey to the country for World Youth Day two decades ago.

“I’m hoping for an impact, in some ways, parallel to what World Youth Day did for Sydney 20 years before, for Australia and Oceania. It brought a great revival for the Church, and I think there are many signs of revival around the Western World, at the moment, for the Church”.

Among the signs of this renewed spiritual fervor, the Archbishop of Sydney highlights the 380 adults who were baptized at the most recent Easter, a 30% increase compared to the previous year.

“In my own country, for six years in a row, we have broken all records for the number of young adults wanting to be received into the Church, to be baptized at Easter. We have the numbers coming up to big events. At our Corpus Christi procession, last year, 20.000 people came to that procession and many of those were young adults. We have lots of other events like youth festivals, evangelization events, there are many young adults involved”.

One of these evangelization projects will debut next May. Using the latest technologies, the Archdiocese will create an immersive, virtual experience of the Sistine Chapel.

“We’ll tell the story of the History of Salvation through the images in the Sistine Chapel, and it would be an opportunity just to give people a bit of a taste, and perhaps a hunger for Eucharistic Congress to come in 2028. I think we will have thousands of people coming through that exhibition”.

Sydney will host this innovative project, which will later be exhibited in the Diocese of Dallas in the United States.
