On the first Sunday of Lent, Pope Leo XIV recalled the anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine and made an appeal, once again, for a peace that should not be “postponed.”

POPE LEO XIV
ORIG. ITALIAN
How many victims, how many lives and families torn apart, how much destruction, how much indescribable suffering! Truly, every war is a wound inflicted upon the entire human family: it leaves behind death, devastation, and a trail of pain that marks generation.
For this reason, I strongly renew my appeal: let the weapons fall silent, let the bombings cease, let a ceasefire be reached without delay, and let dialogue be strengthened in order to open the path toward peace.

In addition, he used the Angelus prayer to recall the importance of finding silence during these days of preparation for Easter and offered a very effective way to achieve it:

POPE LEO XIV
Let us silence our televisions, radios, and smartphones for a while.
Let us listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit, who speaks to us in our hearts, and let us listen to one another — in our families, in our workplaces, and in our communities.

Pope Leo invited the faithful to pray both individually and as a community during this Lenten season, a preparation that he himself will undertake together with the rest of the Roman Curia during the spiritual exercises from February 22 to 27.
