It was a highly anticipated meeting for the entire diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See, as it was the first opportunity to engage with Pope Leo the 14th and his political thinking.
The new pope delivered a speech very much in line with that of his predecessor. He called for respect for religious freedom and, in the social sphere, urged efforts to fight inequality and invest in families, founded upon the stable union between a man and a woman.
LEO XIV
"In this time of change we are living through, the Holy See cannot remain silent in the face of numerous imbalances and injustices that lead, among other things, to undignified working conditions and increasingly fragmented and conflict-ridden societies."
Pope Leo XIV expressed concern over the global rearming trend, called for assistance to migrants—reminding all that he himself is a descendant of migrants—and emphasized the ethical use of new technologies and care for the environment.
