The weekend at the Vatican began under the shadow of the conflict between Israel and Iran. The Pope had resumed the Jubilee audiences that Pope Francis had established to create more opportunities for meetings between pilgrims and the Pope during the Jubilee. Pope Leo XIV took the occasion to make a call for peace.
POPE LEO XIV
The situation in Iran and Israel has seriously deteriorated, and at such a delicate moment, I wish to strongly renew my appeal for responsibility and reason.
Additionally, the Pope also sent a video message to his native archdiocese, Chicago. It had organized a gathering in his honor at the White Sox baseball stadium.
POPE LEO XIV
So many people who suffer from different experiences of depression or sadness - they can discover that the love of God is truly healing, that it brings hope, and that actually, coming together as friends, as brothers and sisters, in community, in a parish, in an experience of living our faith together, we can find that the Lord’s grace, that the love of God can truly heal us, can give us the strength that we need, can be the source of that hope that we all need in our lives.
On Sunday, Pope Leo closed the Jubilee of Sport. This event coincided with the Feast of the Holy Trinity, so the liturgical celebration was solemn.
There, the Pope reflected on the lessons of sport, and above all, on the art of learning to lose.
POPE LEO XIV
The athlete who no longer makes mistakes, who never loses, does not exist. Champions are not infallible machines, but men and women who, even when they fall, find the courage to get back up.
Minutes later, during the Angelus, Pope Leo expressed sorrow over the deterioration of international relations due to the growing number of conflicts. He condemned the killing of around 200 people at a Catholic mission in Nigeria and mourned the death of a parish priest during the bombings in Sudan.
