The news that had kept Rome on edge arrived at half past midnight: the 66-year-old worker who had been trapped inside the Torre dei Conti for eleven hours following the first collapse died shortly after being rescued and taken to the hospital.
Rescue teams had worked tirelessly for hours, even risking their lives after a second collapse.
LAMBERTO GIANNINI
Prefect of Rome
Unfortunately, there was a collapse. Fortunately, none of the firefighters were injured, but more debris fell.
The operation unfolded before the eyes of surprised tourists, with the tower, located just 500 meters from the Colosseum.
I came with my brother to see the Colosseum, but I ended up seeing all the commotion and wanted to ask what had happened. It worried me.
The Torre dei Conti was undergoing restoration. The Italian government had allocated more than 6 million euros for the project. However, it is not the first historic building in the Forum area to suffer damage. In 2018, the roof of the Church of St. Joseph of the Carpenters, located about 300 meters from the tower, collapsed.
Dating back to the 13th century, the tower was one of the most iconic landmarks of medieval Rome. It was the emblematic residence of one of the most powerful families of the time, to which Pope Innocent III belonged.
