Pope Leo XIV visited the Little Sisters of the Poor’s nursing home in Istanbul on the second day of his first apostolic journey.
After holding a meeting at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in the Turkish city, the second stop on his schedule was this visit.
Once there, he greeted each of the residents with affection, closeness, and gratitude.
He also took the opportunity to praise the work that these religious sisters carry out alongside the elderly.
POPE LEO XIV
The Lord has called you not only to assist or help the poor, but also to be their ‘sisters.’
The secret of Christian charity is that, before being for others, we must first be with others, in a communion based on fraternity.
He also dedicated a few words to all the elderly who live there and receive the care of the Little Sisters, who devote their entire lives to this mission.
POPE LEO XIV
Instead, Sacred Scripture and good traditions teach us that—as Pope Francis liked to repeat—the elderly are the wisdom of a people, a treasure for their grandchildren, for families, and for society as a whole.
A very moving encounter in which Pope Leo once again displayed his concern for the most vulnerable members of society, even taking time away from on this, his first apostolic journey to Turkey and Lebanon.
