Behind his message, figures show the need for urgency. In Somalia, about 6 million people, one in three residents, are facing critical levels of hunger.
And about 1.9 million children under the age of five are suffering from acute malnutrition.
Rainfall has been far below average. At the same time, insecurity is making it harder to reach markets, essential services and humanitarian aid.

I am following with great concern the ongoing humanitarian crisis in certain areas of Somalia, where acts of violence and extreme weather events are exacerbating the already precarious living conditions of the population, particularly women and children. I hope for a generous response from the international community, so that our brothers and sisters there do not lack the necessary assistance.
The World Food Programme has reduced its emergency food assistance, from more than 2 million people served to just over 600,000.
He also remembered those who suffered during World War II, saying that remembering what happened can help prevent us from making the same mistake again.
