Franciscan Father Vittorio Francesco Viola is the new papal vicar for Vatican City, archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica, and president of the Fabric of St. Peter's.

In other words, he is assuming the three high-ranking positions previously held by Mauro Gambetti, following the announcement a few days ago that Gambetti would become bishop of an Italian diocese.

Viola is Italian and is 61 years old. Until now, he served as secretary of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. He is an expert in liturgy and, among other things, will preside over the celebrations marking the 400th anniversary of the world’s most important basilica on November 18.

In addition, as vicar for the Vatican City State, he will carry out pastoral duties within the territory. And as president of the so-called “Fábrica,” he will be responsible for matters related to the preservation and upkeep of the basilica.
