Pope Leo XIV remains in hospital after undergoing a successful surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. The Holy See Press Office said the Pope had a “calm night,” with a further update expected later today.

In his absence, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, who was elected as Dean of the College of Cardinals last week, presided over the mass. He delivered the homily prepared by Pope Leo to mark the 10th anniversary of the publication of Amoris Laetitia.

CARD. LUIS ANTONIO TAGLE

Dean of the College of Cardinals

Dear brothers and sisters, I myself have the honor of presiding over this celebration by special mandate of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, in order to manifest publicly the ecclesiastical communion he has granted to His Beatitude Paul III Nona, Patriarch of Baghdad of the Chaldeans, who is participating in this Eucharist.

At the end of the audience, the faithful also offered prayers for the Pope’s recovery:

For Pope Leo, may he find comfort in the lords presence and in the prayerful support of the entire church, that he may enjoy a peaceful recovery and a swift and full return to health.

After examination, it was confirmed that the nodule the pope had removed was cancerous. Further tests are will determine if the cancer has spread, and whether the Pope is fit to travel to South America as planned.
