This Sunday was different at the Vatican. Faithful from all over the world came to see Pope Leo XIV, who returned home after undergoing surgery for a pulmonary adenocarcinoma on Tuesday.
EDELMYS, Guatemala:
We were already on our way here feeling a little sad because we weren't going to see him, but yesterday we found out on social media that he was going to appear today, so that's why we came here.
CAROLINA, España:
We came to see the Pope; we were just passing through, and we wanted to take advantage of the opportunity in case he came out today, since he’d been hospitalized and all, we weren’t sure if he’d be able to come out to greet the crowd for the Angelus.
After reciting the Angelus and giving his blessing, Pope Leo XIV thanked the faithful and the staff of the Gemelli Polyclinic.
POPE LEO XIV:
I would like to thank all those who have prayed for me in recent days. I have truly sensed your support. Thank you!
This experience has made me feel particularly close to all those who are living with illness or infirmity.
The excitement among pilgrims from all over the world was high.
GUILLERMO, Honduras:
Wow, the most exciting 10 minutes of my life. I’m so excited. It was so nice to see the Pope.
JOSÉ, Mexico:
It was incredible to see him, and it was a dream come true to be here, to feel his presence, and to be here with him.
PAULA, Colombia:
Oh, no, it was spectacular. I’m so happy, I’m so thrilled. Well, it means so much to us to be able to see him because we admire him so much here in Colombia, too.
And although the pope did not say anything specific about the trip to Latin America scheduled for November, Peruvians are certain that they will welcome him to their country.
ULISES, Peru:
We’re waiting for him in Peru because he considers himself Peruvian. He has Peruvian documents. He understands the reality of Peru. The Pope hasn’t forgotten that.
VICKY, Peru:
We await you with open arms in Peru, all of Peru, together with the Pope.
ANDREA, Peru:
He's about to arrive in Peru, and back in Peru we were worried about whether he was going to come or not, whether he was going to go or not. And now we're so happy to hear that he's going to be discharged.
So everyone in Peru must be happy and pray hard for the pope.
For now, the trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru has not been canceled, so it remains on Pope XIV's schedule.
