As the only person in the history of the Catholic Church to become a cardinal from India's Dalit population— the “untouchable” caste—newly appointed Cardinal Anthony Poola offers a unique perspective.

In an interview with Vatican News, Cardinal Poola said he believes his appointment is an active step towards the Pope’s mission to “reach out to the peripheries.”

He has led the diocese of Hyderabad since 2020, after serving as bishop of Kurnool for twelve years.
