Vatican establishes diplomatic relations with Mauritania

December 9, 2016. The Vatican will establish diplomatic relations with Mauritania. This African country is an Islamic Republic extremely hostile towards Christians. This means that an Apostolic Nuncio will be sent to Nouakchott, the capital, and Mauritania will have an ambassador to the Holy See in Rome. Mauritania has a very small Catholic community of 4,500 members, most of which are expats working in the country. ;
