Pope Francis lived for some time in Germany, so, even though he had an interpreter, he was able to understand the political leader. One instance was when the executive told him one of assistants spoke Spanish.

The two leaders than exchanged gifts. The president brought the Pope a basket of traditional Bavarian products. Pope Francis was surprised at one particular item.
